Petra is one of the world’s greatest attractions

Petra, Jordan is one of the  the world’s greatest must-see attractions according to the Guardian’s readers.

In 1845 John William Burgon took the Newdigate Prize for his poem Petra, referring to Petra, the inaccessible city in the present Jordan, which he had heard described but had never seen [wiki]:

It seems no work of Man’s creative hand,

by labour wrought as wavering fancy planned;

But from the rock as if by magic grown,

eternal, silent, beautiful, alone!

Not virgin-white like that old Doric shrine,

where erst Athena held her rites divine;

Not saintly-grey, like many a minster fane,

that crowns the hill and consecrates the plain;

But rose-red as if the blush of dawn,

that first beheld them were not yet withdrawn;

The hues of youth upon a brow of woe,

which Man deemed old two thousand years ago,

match me such marvel save in Eastern clime,

a rose-red city half as old as time.

  1. Same here haitham, I lived in Jordan most of my life never been to Petra, luckily I went to Petra a few years ago when I went to Visit I was amazed. I found that Jordan has a lot to offer for all kinds of tourists….:) from adventure to Eco-Tourism…

  2. Haitham and Mr. T,
    This shows how bad the local tourism in Jordan. I don’t think ministry of tourism is doing any effort in promoting Jordan to the locals. Or why for example schools don’t take students to camp their. We have one of the world’s top 10 wonders yet more than 2/3 of Jordanians didn’t see it.

  3. I think Petra can be a gorgeous destination, the Ministry of Tourism needs to take care of it that’s it, just like any other place in Jordan, we have beautiful places but we suck at promoting and tourism is في حال يرثى لها

  5. Rand, I agree with you. I also blame ministry of tourism for their lack of interest to promote local tourist sites to Jordanians. For example, we have very green beautiful places in the North of the country but people outside Irbid don’t know about these places. Tourism doesn’t mean promoting historical places only.

    Haitham, Maybe if you see Petra you will change your mind 🙂 and promote it to others.

    Samar, I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t like to travel and visit places. Not being very pro-active could be because of missing an important factor that is money. To tell you the truth I don’t know much about the expenses of local tourism. But I think many Jordanians don’t visit other local cities because of the high expenses. I hope ministry of tourism is doing something about it to reduce the expenses on locals. Local tourism is very important factor in the country’s business that we are lacking.

    1. Actually, shocking enough…the prices aren’t that high. If you are a non-Jordanian..the entrance fee to Petra is 33 JDs but for Jordanians, I believe it’s a total of 10 JD or less. Yes, I understand a lot of people don’t have that kind of money to waste but there are other attactions that don’t cost a dime. Another example is the Roman Theatre, for Jordanians it’s a mere 30 fils. For non- Jordanians it’s 1 jd. The thing I hear the most is, if I have 30 jds and I can go to Syria, I will…why waste my time in Jordan. Some people just choose to leave the country because it’s easy. There isn’t enough marketing of Local tourism but I think it goes both ways.
